Canada Post, union looking to avoid strike

OTTAWA – The union representing workers at Canada Post is poised to present a new contract proposal Sunday, as the two sides work against a threatened strike this week.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers hopes Sunday’s offer will address the remaining outstanding issues involving urban workers.
The two sides are expected to negotiate through the long weekend to try to avert a possible strike this week.
Canada Post says it has not been given 72-hour strike notice so the earliest any job action could occur is Thursday.
The workers have been without a contract since January.
Major issues include wages and benefits, staffing levels and working conditions.
The post office has reached an agreement with the union to bring in volunteer postal workers to deliver cheques to pensioners and those on social assistance should a labour disruption occur.
