Another busy weekend in the capital

We all know that the summer brings many outdoor events in Ottawa including the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest, Capital City Hoedown, Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Canada Day festivities. But this weekend has plenty of cool events on the go as well, with many making their ever-more-popular return this year.
There are many events going on around the city over the weekend from the Italian Festival to the Dragon Boat Race and everywhere in between.
This is the weekend at a glance:
Italian Week
June 9-19
Preston Street
The Corso Italia (Preston Street) is the place to be for great Italian music, food, pageantry, art and opera at the piazza (a traditional festival square).
Dragon Boat Race
June 17-19
The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, the largest dragon boat festival in North
America is celebrating its 18th year from June 17 & 19 at Mooney’s Bay Park. Races begin bright and early on Saturday, June 18 at 7:30 a.m. with a new race beginning every 9 minutes. The opening ceremony begins at 12:00 noon and features the traditional eye dotting ceremony to awaken the sprit of the dragon. The Tim Hortons Children’s Area will have great family programming on Saturday and Sunday with crowd favorites such as Magician Chris Pilsworth, Little Ray’s Reptiles, Sparticat and more. Take advantage of three days of free family entertainment and get the most out of the Festival.
ALS Walk for Dad
June 18
WALK for ALS is a fun, family friendly event that occurs across the country each year in more than 78 communities and is organized by local volunteers. In 2010 the Walk generated over $2.4 million, thanks to more than 18,000 walkers and more than 165,000 donors.
Canada Dance Festival
June 15-18

Fringe Festival
June 16-26
A Fringe Festival is a forum that unites artists and audiences in a fun, exploratory environment. The guiding principles of the Fringe include unrestricted artistic expression, accessibility and community development.
Alterna Do It For Dad!
June 19
A run in support of local cancer care through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
Scotiabank Walk, Roll & Run for Roger’s House
June 19
Join the Sens Foundation June 29th for the Scotiabank Walk, Roll & Run for Roger’s House presented by the Ottawa Citizen. Walk, Roll & Run is a non-competitive event for families and friends to raise money for Roger’s House, the charity of choice of the Sens Foundation.

2011 bitHeads Annual Charity Golf Tourney
June 21
Funds raised are used to support the 13,000 people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia’s as well as their families, and to promote research.
