Alterna Do It For Dad raises funds for new equipment

More than 17,000 Ottawans are expected to lace up to improve local cancer care by participating in the Alterna Do It For Dad run and family walk for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

Funds raised will go toward the purchase of a Da Vinci robot-assisted surgical system for the Ottawa Hospital used primarily for prostate cancer surgeries.

It will provide a non-invasive surgical option for men in Ottawa who would otherwise have to seek treatment in other centres.

Olympic gold medal winning swimmer Alex Baumann has joined the V.I.P celebrity team for this year’s event because it’s personal.

After being diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, he underwent robotic assisted surgery himself just after his 47th birthday.

Baumann told 1310News he had to go to Montreal to get the surgery, because Ottawa did not yet have the capacity to do it.

There are 10k and 5k timed runs, a 5k fitness walk and new this year a 2k family fun walk.
