“Tragic” and “troubled”, that’s how Henry Belmore’s mother describes her son, who was stabbed to death in downtown Ottawa early Sunday Morning.
Catherine Belmore would not go into the details of her son’s life before he moved to Ottawa several months ago and began living at The Ottawa Mission.
She only told The Ottawa Citizen that her 27-year-old son struggled with addiction.
Ottawa Police have confirmed Belmore’s death is Ottawa’s sixth murder of the year.
Henry and his friend John O’Mara had spent the day drinking beer. The two were walking along Rideau Street when O’Mara says Henry cut between two men also walking by. A fight then broke out.
O’Mara told The Citizen that Henry had been barred from the mission on Sunday for ‘insulting behaviour’ – saying it was that same behaviour that got him killed.
Henry was stabbed in the upper torso and bled to death on the sidewalk.
Police say they want to talk to a woman who called 9-1-1 about the incident.
The Ottawa Police Major Crimes Unit will soon release a picture of a man, who walked by the stabbing as it occured.
They are hoping he will come forward with more details of the homicide as well.
