Internet biggest revenue source in Canada

A new study shows the Internet has surpassed daily newspapers as the second biggest advertising revenue source in Canada, after television.

The study, by the Interactive Advertising Bureau of Canada, says online ad revenue grew 23 per cent last year to more than $2.23 billion.

Bureau president Paula Gignac calls it “a watershed moment for the digital community in Canada.”

The online realm was also the country’s fastest growing advertising medium.

Search advertising continued to lead online revenue types, followed by display and classified advertising.

By category, automotive ads pulled in the most revenue.

Online video advertising grew from $20 million in 2009 to $37 million in 2010.

More than $420 million, or 19 per cent of the online ad revenue, was received by French Canadian online properties.

Publishers who responded to the group’s annual survey projected revenues would grow by nearly $2.6 billion in 2011.
