Councillor confident expanded smoking ban will be approved

The councillor proposing a smoking ban in parks, patios and beaches says he’s confident his motion will be passed by city council.

Stephen Blais has been discussing the idea with other councillors and says so far the reaction has been good.

“I’ve had some very positive conversations with a number of my colleagues. Everyone has some questions, some valid questions, and they need to be answered. My hope is that once we receive the information from public health council will choose to put children’s health first,” Blais tells 1310News.

Blais is open to changes for his bill and doesn’t believe there will be much of an added cost to the city.

The motion will be brought before council next week and Blais hopes to have it passed before the 2012 budget.
