Spotlight on Alberta’s oilsands for environmental demonstration

WASHINGTON – The spotlight will be shining more brightly on Alberta’s oilsands as an environmental demonstration in Washington begins Saturday.

The plan is for sit-ins at the White House to try to convince the Obama administration to kill TransCanada Corporation’s seven-billion dollar Keystone pipeline proposal. The U.S. is currently considering whether to approve the pipeline that would run from Canada to a Gulf Coast refinery in Texas.

The protesters, meantime, have some Hollywood star power on their side. Oscar-nominated actor Mark Ruffalo is asking people to get involved in the sit-ins that are due to continue until September third.

Organizers say some 15 000 people have signed up to participate in the protests. They say Ruffalo won’t be at the White House today, but plans to take part sometime in the next two weeks. Canadian-born actress Margot Kidder also intends to be involved, as does actor Danny Glover.
