Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he and Laureen were both deeply saddened to hear of Jack Layton’s passing.
“Jack Layton will be remembered for the force of his personality and and his dedication to public life. We have all lost an engaging personality and a man with strong principles,” Harper said in a special press conference in Ottawa Monday afternoon.
He mentioned his regret at missing the opportunity to play music with Layton.
“Now, as you know Jack was a musician, he was quite a natural one at that, and we always talked about getting together to jam but it seemed we were always both too busy,” said Harper.
“I will always regret the jam session that never was.”
Harper also spoke on the current situation in Libya and on the investigation into what caused the crash Saturday of the First Air Boeing 737 that killed 12 and injured three.
He said his thoughts are with families there as they grieve and issued thanks to the people of Resolute Bay and the military who helped in rescue efforts.
