Some first-year Carleton University students are moving into a construction zone because the school’s brand new residence is only half-finished.
The new Lennox and Addington residence can only house students from floors two through six because the rest of the building is incomplete.
To accommodate everyone, students who were promised single rooms will be getting a roommate.
Kaisha Thompson, president of the Rideau River Residence Association said first-year students are taking the news well.
“For the most part students are excited,” said Thompson. “They’re happy to live in that building. Maybe in October they won’t be but for now they are.”
Student Eric said he was supposed to live in the new residence but he changed his living accommodations when he heard the news.
“It’s under construction, and I did not want to be in that,” said Eric. “Even though they set a date, it’s never met, with construction. I’m just happy it’s one more worry off my stressful beginning.”
Students who are sticking it out through the construction will be given $265 a month for the hassle.
The school will hire a moving company to get the students into their permanent rooms as they become completed.
Construction crews will be working on the new building every day starting at seven in the morning in order to complete the project by November.
