Some BC residents being allowed to return home after forest fire

Residents evacuated by a forest fire in British Columbia’s Okanagan region are being allowed back home.

The 550 residents were rushed out of their homes and campsites early yesterday when a wildfire threatened more than 100 homes and a campground.

BC Wildfire Management decided to lift the order last evening, allowing evacuees to return to Trader’s Cove, just northwest of Kelowna, and to the Bear Creek provincial campsite.

The evacuation order came only after the fire had extended to 39 hectares and come within about 400 metres of a home.

Kelowna’s deputy fire chief, Jason Brolund, says an evacuation alert remains in place, and residents can be asked to leave at a moment’s notice.

He says campers can return to pick up their belongings but the campsite will remain closed.
