Two people killed after massive wildfire in Texas

Authorities say two people have died in a massive wildfire near Austin, Texas, that has destroyed 600 homes.

Bastrop County Sheriff Terry Pickering said Tuesday he had no details about the deaths.

The Texas Forest Service said firefighters had not begun to contain the blaze and that it had scorched about 12,140 hectares since Sunday.

The fire 48 kilometres southeast of the state capital was one of dozens throughout Texas fanned by winds from Tropical Storm Lee.

Texas officials say more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 40,469 hectares burned over the past week.

A 20-year-old woman and her 18-month-old daughter were killed Sunday in an East Texas blaze.
