New RCMP strategy for fighting marijuana grow ops

A new RCMP strategy for fighting marijuana grow operations in Canada, unveiled Wednesday, will focus on three pillars: enforcement, deterrence and awareness.
Part of the effort to increase public awareness is a list of every grow op found and dismantled by the RCMP. A listing with the address will be made available on the force’s website for one year to let future homeowners, landlords and renters know the history of a home. Tt also lets communities keep tabs on how safe their neighbourhoods are.
Speaking for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, Conservative MP Shelly Glover said this public list is important because grow ops pose serious health and safety concerns.
“So knowing about the fact that there may have been a grow up or clam lab in that residence allows anyone who is potentially going to be buying that residence an opportunity to ensure that all of the health risks, all of the safety risks, have in fact been addressed,” she said.
The strategy also includes front-line training for officers and teaching landlords to recognize signs tenants may run a grow up.
