Conservatives push crime bill through

The Conservative government is using its majority in the House of Commons to push along its omni-bus tough-on-crime legislation.

A motion to restrict debate on the massive crime bill to two days before sending it to a Conservative-dominated committee for study has been approved by a vote of 158-133.

The bill includes nine separate pieces of legislation that previous parliaments failed to pass, including tougher prison sentences for drug and other offences.

Critics say the measures will send Canada down the route of the failed U.S. war on drugs.
