No strike for Air Canada

TORONTO, Ont. – CUPE officials have announced that Air Canada flight attendants will not be going on strike tonight after they received a notice by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board.
The CIRB decided to ground strike plans by flight attendants while it considers the labor dispute.
The nearly 7,000 employees were set to walk off the job at 12:01 a.m., Thursday.
Minister of Labour Lisa Raitt asked the CIRB to determine if conditions unfavourable to a settlement exist and if so, to either impose a new collective agreement or a binding method of resolving the dispute.
As long as the board is dealing with the matter, the union representing the flight attendants will not be allowed to go on strike.
By doing this the government will now have time to pass back-to-work legislation when the House of Commons resumes next week.
Labour lawyer Maurice Lasry is not happy with the tactics of the Conservatives and told 680News it is unnecessary.
“The economy is like a spice used in every soup now. I don’t think it applies in this case because there are other airlines that provide these services,” said Lasry.
The government is urging the two parties to come to their own agreement and said it would result in the best outcome for the two sides.
CUPE said they remain available to continue negotiations between the two sides. Flight attendants have already rejected two collective agreements.
