OTTAWA – The Occupy Wall Street movement is spreading, inspiring about 1,000 gatherings set to take place Saturday in cities around the world, including here in Ottawa.
About 300 people are gathered at Confederation Park for Occupy Ottawa.
There is no word on how long the occupation will last.
Ottawa Police are keeping a close eye on the group and say they are prepared in the event the occupation takes over.
“Being the nation’s capital there’s all kinds of protests in the city and we certainly try to reach out to all of them and for the most part we get a lot of cooperation,” said a spokesperson for the force.
Ottawa is among at least seven Canadian cities to see the occupy movement on Saturday.
Meantime, fears of a showdown between police and Wall Street protesters in New York have been eased — at least for now.
A planned cleaning of the protest encampment in lower Manhattan set to begin Friday morning has been postponed.
The protesters had said it was a pretext to evict them.
