Sunday marks the one year anniversary of Ottawa teen Daron Richardson took her own life and her parents want to make sure the issue of teen suicide stays in the public eye.
Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson and his wife Stephanie appeared on Hockey Central on Sportsnet Saturday evening, where they spoke about the past 12 months and the ongoing campaign to keep Daron’s memory alive.
The two helped create the “Do it for Daron” Foundation, which has raised $1-million for the Royal Ottawa Hospital to date.
Luke spoke about the foundation.
“Really the whole concept of ‘Do it for Daron’, D.I.F.D., that is really growing huge–it came from the children, and the kids,” he said. “They’re the ones that came up with it. They’re the driving force of it. As adults we just maybe gave it a little bit of direction.”
The interview was the first time Stephanie Richardson spoke publicly.
“I wake up and I still think ‘Oh, I have to make the girls breakfast,’ or I wait for Daron to walk in the door, or I wait for her to text me, and it feels like yesterday.”
Sunday night Bryan Bedard, a former Sens draft pick, and figure skater Marie-France Dubreuil are skating in support of D.I.F.D. on CBC’s Battle of the Blades.”
If they win, the foundation will receive $100-thousand.
