Ottawa man charged with human smuggling

An Ottawa man has been charged with human smuggling after a year long investigation by the Canada Border Services Agency, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the RCMP and Ottawa police.

Police searched two Ottawa homes and a vehicle on November 21, arresting 49-year-old Mohamed Farah Abdulle.  He has been charged with several counts of human smuggling, identity theft and government fraud.

Chris Kealey of CBSA tells 1310News why Abdulle was charged.

“His role was that of an immigration consultant and he is alleged to have forged some documents that would have assisted other people.  He then submitted sponsorship applications on their behalf to enter Canada,” said Kealey.

Kealy says police and border services are continuing the investigation, dubbed Project Vista, and may lay more charges against Abdulle, or possibly other suspects.

Abdulle is in police custody and will appear in court Thursday.
