Freezing rain warning causes school bus cancellations

OTTAWA – Break out the ice scrapers, a nasty storm is heading for the city.
A major storm is heading across the lower Great Lakes region, which has caused Environment Canada to issue a freezing rain warning for the Ottawa area, and Gatineau.
All school buses for English Catholic and Public Schools, in addition to French Catholic and Public Schools in Ottawa have been cancelled due to the freezing rain warning. School buses also cancelled for the Upper Canada District School Board and Renfrew County – except for Whitney Elementary School.
The cancellation in the Ottawa-area will affect approximately 5,600 students. The freezing rain system is expected later Wednesday morning. It’s expected to last several hours and bring up to ten millimetres of ice secretion. The rain will change to wet snow overnight.
This storm is pummeling the U.S. as well, ripping through much of the central plains and dumping heavy snow to parts of five states.
It has been blamed for at least six deaths.
As much as 40 centimetres has fallen on parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
