Capital Cup kicks off

Over 7,000 atom and peewee hockey players from across the globe are in Ottawa to compete in the 13th annual Bell Capital Cup.
The players represent 410 teams, some from as far away as South Korea, Finland and Germany. They are split into 19 divisions, including two girl’s groups.
The tournament takes place at arenas from Stittsville to Navan, with the main events taking place at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata.
“Trading pins is fun,” said one player on the Kanata Rangers girls’ team. “Playing teams and beating them is fun, also hanging out with my team mates and hanging around the rink and seeing where other teams come from.”
Many of the players were collecting pins from all the other teams and wearing them on lanyards around their necks.
Players said they were excited to face off against teams they’d never played before.
“It’s very cool,” said one Ottawa Silver Seven. “We were watching a German team play. They play so much different than we play here in Canada. No contact.”
The tournament wraps up January 1st, and each division’s championship game will take place at the Scotiabank Place.
