Mayor Jim Watson gives State of the City Address

Mayor Jim Watson says the city can no longer rely on the federal government as the primary employer in the city.

“The days of relying on the government of Canada to be the primary engine of this community’s growth are behind us,” he said as he gave his State of the City address Wednesday morning.

The mayor added it is time to market the city aggressively as the public sector is bound to shrink once the next federal budget is tabled.

Watson says council has worked hard to contain increases and fees the city charges.  He says that includes freezing recreation fees the last two years and reducing increases in transit fares by 60 percent compared to the previous three years.

Watson also announced a new Barbara Ann Scott room on the first floor at City Hall to showcase her achievements.  He and he thanked the late Earl McRea for the idea.

There is also a new also new civic award called Order of Ottawa and a youth summit that will be held in the fall 2012
