OC Transpo’s general manager stepping down next month

The City of Ottawa leadership team is losing a steadfast member in July as the municipality says its General Manager of Transit Services will be leaving.

Since 2021, Renée Amilcar has been steering the plans for Ottawa’s light rail transit system and O-Trains, trying to battle the ongoing budget deficit and complaints from residents. Her last day is July 18.

“Renée has served the City with dedication and professionalism, leading the Transit Services team through a period of significant operational transformation, modernization and service improvement,” a memo from Wendy Stephanson, city manager, reads.

Through her time with the city, Amilcar has been the leader on improving the reliability of Line 1, and was also a key communicator in the launch of Line 2 and 4. She also helped put together a roadmap for OC Transpo to help bolster the agency.

“I recognize that ensuring strong, stable leadership during this time is of paramount importance—particularly as we continue to deliver safe, reliable transit service to residents while advancing major city-wide transformational projects,” Stephanson wrote.

In the meantime, Troy Charter is stepping into the position for the interim as Amilcar leaves next month.

Amilcar is an industrial engineer with nearly 20 years experience at the Société de transport de Montréal (STM). Before working for Montreal’s transit system, Amilcar worked at Nortel, as well as Pratt and Whitney.
