Ottawa schools perform above provincial average

TORONTO, Ont. – The Fraser Institute has released its annual ranking of Ontario elementary schools, and it appears school boards here in the capital are making the grade.

With Merrickville Public School at the top of the list at 10.0 and schools like Centennial Public School at the bottom with a 1.2 score its quite clear the results differ from classroom to classroom.

Michael Thomas, Associate Director of School Performance Studies at the Fraser Institute told 1310News the results don’t just change across the province and it’s up to the parents to find out why.

“The variation in results is not just across the province, it’s within each school board. So you see schools like Brother Andre which are improving and are now above average and then you have schools that are far below,” said Thomas. “What we encourage families to do is learn more about their schools and find out why it’s achieving the marks it is.”

Brother Andre was Ottawa’s fasting improving school over the last five years improving from 2.7 in 2006 to 6.8 in this report.

Meanwhile, Saint-Francois d’Assise saw the biggest drop over the five year span, falling from 7.8 to 3.5 a drop of 4.3 points.

Overall, La Source, the French Catholic school in Orleans is Ottawa’s highest ranked school, scoring 9.8/10.

The Conservative think tank says their report card allows parents to review the academic performance of their child’s school over the past five years and compare it to other schools in the province.
