Ex-Mountie Kevin Gregson guilty of first-degree murder

OTTAWA, On.- Ex-Mountie Kevin Gregson has been found guilty as charged for the first degree murder of Ottawa Police Constable Eric Czapnik.

It took the jury 9 and a half hours to deliberate. They took one short break and worked through dinner Tuesday evening.

The jury, consisting of eight men and four women, listened to two weeks of testimony.

A first degree murder conviction carries penalty of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Gregson’s lawyers had argued he should be convicted of manslaughter, the prosecution says Gregson is guilty of first degree murder and that he planned to kill the night he stabbed 51-year-old Constable Czapnik to death.

Constable Czapnik was the first Ottawa Police officer to die in line of duty in more than 20 years.
