1 dead, 3 missing after yacht breaks down off Nova Scotia

YARMOUTH, N.S. – Crews are searching for three people missing from a disabled yacht off Nova Scotia’s southwest coast, Tuesday, after it broke down, leaving one dead and five others rescued.

Major Paule (Paul) Poulin of the Halifax search-and-rescue centre said  the yacht broke down late Monday night and was drifting about 130 kilometres south of Cape Sable Island.

A U.S. Falcon aircraft, a Cormorant and a Canadian Coast Guard cutter are searching the area.

Crews are contending with a low ceiling in the search for the three missing people, who were reportedly wearing life-jackets.

Captain Bertrand Thibodeau — a Hercules pilot involved in the search Tuesday morning — said the conditions are some of the harshest he has seen, with five-metre swells.

Three other people were taken off the yacht by the passing tanker FSL Hamburg and were en route to Saint John, N.B.

There were no details on the identities of the nine people on board the vessel but the military said they are believed to be foreign nationals.

The two injured men and the body of the dead person were taken to a hospital in Yarmouth, N.S., where the injured are listed in fair condition.
