OTTAWA – Commuters in Ottawa who use Bronson regularly will have to find a different route. Bronson Ave. is closed to traffic between Somerset St. and Catherine St. until December.
The two year, $30 million reconstruction project will see city crews working to replace 100-year old sewers, improving landscaping, and widening sidewalks.
Monique tells 1310News she knows how lucky she is to take Bronson southbound instead of northbound.
“It is busy. I have walked this way at lunchtime and it is a very busy street. The closure won’t have a nice affect.”
Commuters aren’t the only ones effected by the closure as businesses along Bronson are bracing for the impact. Nine months without traffic will cause problems for business owners.
Leo Defranco, Service Manager at the Midas at Bronson and Gladstone says things dropped of dramatically even on day one Tuesday.
“Even in the past week we’ve seen a little bit of a decline in business because a lot of people already thought that Bronson was closed with the signage already being put on the roads,” said Defranco. “We did already have to reduce the staff unfortunately. We’re down to two people now at our location. I mean we didn’t have much of a choice in that.”
Design and Construction Manager, Ziad Ghadban, tells 1310News that a portion of Bronson Ave. between Somerset St. and Laurier Ave. will be down to one lane sometime over the summer.
