Government funding announced for Encounters with Canada

The Conservative government announced $10 m in funding for Encounters with Canada over the next three years on Monday at the Encounters with Canada headquarters in the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre.

The Encounters program brings together high school students from across the country, teaching them about Canadian history, politics, and culture.

Heritage minister James Moore made the announcement, telling the students gathered investing in Encounters with Canada was an easy choice to make.

“Because Encounters with Canada works, Encounters has been successful. Ninety-thousand people have been touched by this program, people have come to Ottawa engaged and gotten to meet other Canadians and then gone back to their communities and then gone back to be even more involved in public life, something I think is fantastic and something, indeed, to be proud of,” he said.

Encounters with Canada spokesperson Jacinthe Benoit told 1310News the program costs students very little, since they only pay a small registration fee.

“All the transportation is paid by Canadian Heritage so it’s a big gift for us,” she said, adding the extension of funding will ensure the program’s survival.

Benoit said she encourages interested students to talk with their teachers and guidance counsellors about getting involved.
