D.N.D job cuts in capital

OTTAWA – The axe has begun to swing at D.N.D.

The department is informing  1,119 workers that their jobs no longer exist.  John MacLennan, president of the Union of National Defence Employees says the cuts target the most vulnerable.

“They’re the lowest paid workers in the government,” he said.

About 150 employees in Ottawa-Gatineau will be affected.  They are mainly kitchen staff, food services and administration.

MacLennan calls the cuts shortsighted.

“They did not close any military bases, they have not reduced the size of the military, it’s going to stay status quo at 68,000 so the work is not going to go away,” he said.

MacLennan tells 1310News those on the block will hear the word at a townhall meeting today and will have a letter in their hand to inform them of their status by the end April.
