Tips for preparing your house for severe weather

You might think of spring as a time for cleaning and gardening, but the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) also warns that during the warm months severe weather becomes more frequent.

So as the sun comes out, Peter Karageorgis of the IBC says it is a perfect time to prepare your home for the upcoming season.

“To look at things such as the grading, make sure that water flowing from your eaves and downspouts flows away from your house,” Karageorgis said.

“Make sure there are no cracks in your foundation, if there are, have them fixed or caulked so that waster doesn’t penetrate into the house,” Karageorgis said.

Another tip involves trimming branches and trees by the home, as severe wind can blow them over and cause damage to your windows and walls.

Keeping an emergency kit can also be helpful, as well as having a family meeting spot should people get split up.

Having an escape and emergency plan can be helpful as well, especially if there are kids at the home.

For insurance purposes, you should also keep a detailed list of your belongings in a safe spot in case your property is badly damaged.
