The federal government tabled a budget-implementation bill that would give federal finance minister Jim Flaherty expanded powers to regulate mortgages.
The changes would make Flaherty the final arbiter in the issuing of mortgage insurance.
Previously, CMHC was under control of the human resources department, but Flaherty had taken the lead in any changes to do with mortgage rules.
Flaherty said this move would recognize that CMHC has become a significant financial institution.
