OTTAWA, On.- The City of Ottawa honoured six young heroes on Friday afternoon at the 14th annual 9-1-1 Children’s Achievement Awards.
Every year the city selects gives the awards to young residents for their bravery and quick thinking in emergency situations.
There were plenty of shy smiles at the ceremony, as the little heroes stepped up to Mayor Jim Watson to accept their certificates.
Many of the recipients weren’t even in the double digits when they made the emergency call they were honoured for.
Proud father Said Mohamed said his daughters were only five and six when they dialed 9-1-1, after their mother fainted.
“A good portion of the credit goes to mom because she made sure both of them knew their address, their full names, their neighbourhood,” said Mohamed. “I’m very proud.”
Another recipient 11-year-old Abdallah Jarah called 911 when his brother started having a seizure.
“I saw my brother having a seizure and my mom crying, so I called 9-1-1and told them the place,” said Jarah. “If you ever see a problem or anything just call 9-1-1 for help.”
The awards were created in 1994 by two police dispatchers.
