The temporary closure of Ottawa’s Nelson House, a shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence could become permanent.
Members have received word through the lawyer for the facility that a special meeting will be held next week.
That is concerning to members and employees.
Keri Lewis is a crisis counsellor at Nelson House and she tells 1310News, it could violate the board’s own by-laws. ” There has not been enough notice given for this special membership meeting.
According to the by-laws, there needs to be 20 days notice given. The other concern we have is the location of the meeting has not been released”.
Nelson House is a 15 bed facility which was temporarily closed on May 25, 2012 by the Board because the facility was lacking an executive director for oversight.
The previous director’s contract expired in April.
Lewis is concerned about their clients. “These beds are closed to women and children and we don’t know what, if anything will be put in place to accommodate the needs of the women and children of the community”.
The vote to come in a closed meeting will be on June 14, 2012.
