The Harper government calls it a ‘modern-day version of slavery.’
From homes, to businesses, to the streets, the government says human trafficking is occurring in more places than you would think. In fact, there are currently 59 human-trafficking cases before the courts in Canada.
The Harper Tories unveiled a new action plan Wednesday, designed to battle human trafficking, forced labour, and sexual exploitation in the country. The government will commit $25-million over four years to the initiative.
“It strips individuals of their freedom and their basic humanity, and leads them into a life of exploitation, usually for the purposes of sexual exploitation of forced labour,” said Rona Ambrose, Minister for the Status of Women.
A dedicated task force is now being set up to combat these issues. It will also take part in national education and awareness campaigns so Canadians can learn to recognize these problems.
Additionally, the government is increasing cooperation with international partners and improving support and services for victims.
