Moving day in the city; busiest day for movers across the GTA

The kids are done school and it appears many of the boxes are now packed.

Saturday, June 30 is commonly known as ‘moving day,’ considered the busiest day of the year for changing residences.

So whether they like it or not, hundreds of families across the GTA will likely be packing up and moving to a new residence Saturday.

Dan Hopkins, Chief-Operating Officer at Two Men and a Truck, says there are a few reasons why.

“A perfect combination of circumstances, the residential real-estate market really heats up in the spring,” Hopkins said.

“By the time families go through the thirty-and-sixty day closing periods in order to purchase their home, it backs them right up to the last week of school.”

The kids also play a role in moving day, according to Hopkins.

“Children are out of school this week, so it’s a perfect opportunity for families to move without disturbing their school year,” Hopkins added.

Many moving companies are twice as busy Saturday as any other day. In order to get a booking with Two Men and a Truck, Hopkins said you had to call nearly six-weeks in advance.

“The Canada Day long weekend gives families an extra day to unpack and get organized before the parents have to go back to work on Monday,” Hopkins said.

So although it’s a pressure-packed day, Hopkins says they love it.

“A lot of our employees enjoy what they do, when you show up at a family’s home and you reduce the stress level, and the family is excited about moving into their new home, it’s a fun experience to be in,” Hopkins said.

The phenomenon is not limited to the GTA either. In Montreal it can even crazier on June 30, as all leases end on July 1.
