Barbara Ann Scott Gallery opens at City Hall

Ottawa Figure skater Barbara Ann Scott is being honoured with a new gallery at City Hall.

Scott is the most decorated athlete in the city’s history and is the only person ever to win an Olympic gold medal and the world, European, North American and Canadian championships during the same year.

Scott picked up the Olympic gold in St. Moritz, Switzerland in 1948.

That gold medal now sits in a display case, among other trophies and memorabilia belonging to Scott.

“I’m happy, happy today, that it’s here where it belongs,” she said. “I sort of did the skating, but Ottawa and all these wonderful people made it possible for me to go. So it’s Canada’s collection.”

Scott donated all of the memorabilia to the city archives.

“This is one of the most special days of my whole life,” said Scott. “To see my collection so beautifully displayed, well it just makes my life complete.”

The Barbara Ann Scott Gallery is open 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.

Only one-third of the collection is on display, and the city plans to rotate the material on a yearly basis.
