Cyber-bullying restaurateur released on bail

OTTAWA, Ont. — A Byward market restaurant owner, convicted of harassing an unhappy diner, has been released on bail five days into her three month jail sentence.

Marisol Simoes, the co-owner of Mambo and Kinki, was sentenced on Friday to 90 days in jail, two years probation and ordered to write a letter of apology to her victim.  She is appealing her criminal libel conviction.

After a woman posted a negative online review of Mambo, Simoes impersonated the customer, creating a suggestive online dating profile in the woman’s name, and sending overtly sexual emails to the victim’s boss and colleagues.

At Simoe’s sentencing, the judge compared her actions to those of cyber-bullying, calling her response to the negative review “personal, vindictive and vicious.”
