Sandy Hook Elementary victims remembered in Ottawa

OTTAWA – Eight days after the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, residents here in the Capital gathered to honour the victims.
A vigil was held Saturday at St. Patrick’s Basillica on Nepean Street.
Music, poetry and prayer highlighted the program, which drew around 20 people.
James Zacour, a teacher at Woodroffe High School sang in the choir during the service.
He told 1310News, with the rush of the holiday season, it can be difficult to find time to reflect on such a horrific event.
“People need to grieve this sort of thing and i think this is a really good opportunity. A lot of people have young children and send their kids to school every day and it’s got to bother them on some level, and I think this sort of process will help them.”
As a teacher, Zacour has seen first hand the impact the shooting has had on teachers and students here.
He hopes that that he could show the same level of bravery as the staff at Sandy Hook did while trying to protect their students during the horrifying massacre.
