OTTAWA, Ont. – Snowfall and winter storm warnings are in effect across most of southern Ontario, and the capital isn’t escaping unscathed. A special weather statement for Ottawa has been lifted; however, we are now under a snowfall warning.
Flurries started Thursday night and the snow is expected to last through Friday, leaving Ottawa with at least 15 cm of snow by the end of the day.
“Expect blowing snow,” said 1310News meteorologist Jill Taylor. “It will take until late this evening before that wind really settles down, so be prepared for cold wind chill values pretty much all day.”
City crews are using all their equipment, 170 salters and 120 sidewalk machines, to clean up the mess.
“There will likely be some significant delays tomorrow (Friday) morning on the roads,” said Jason Staniforth with the City of Ottawa.
Winds are causing blowing snow as well, reducing visibility on the roads.
“Slow down and keep a safe distance,” said Ottawa police sergeant Fred St. Pierre. “Just be careful out there because it’s slippery and some of the roads are quite snow covered.”
School buses have been cancelled for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, as well as the Catholic and French boards. School buses are also cancelled for the Upper Canada District School Board, the Catholic School Board of Eastern Ontario and the corresponding French-language boards.
Schools remain open.
The snow storm will also cause problems for air travelers as well. Be prepared for delays and cancellations if you’re flying in and out of Ottawa on Friday. Click here for a list of delays and cancellations at the Ottawa Airport.
