THURSO, Que. – The preliminary investigation into a fatal fire in Thurso, Quebec suggests the blaze was caused by an electrical problem, according to Surete du Quebec.
Two children were killed in the house fire 45 kilometres northeast of Ottawa, Wednesday morning.
Two bodies were found inside the home, on the second floor. The bodies were confirmed to be that of Rebecca Leger, 8, and Amanda Price, 3, who were sisters in a blended family.
Six other people – three children, their parents and a 12-year-old friend of one of the girls – were taken to hospital.
“The father is still in hospital in critical condition,” said Sgt. Marc Tessier, Surete du Quebec. “We fear for his life right now.”
The man’s 12-year-old daughter is also in critical condition. The mother, her eight-year-old son and a baby have been released.
Crews were called to the home, on rue Lacroix, just after 5 a.m. By Wednesday afternoon, the fire had been extinguished and work shifted to stabilizing what was left of the home so that the bodies of the two girls could be safely removed.
The fire is believed to have started in the basement.
