MONTREAL — The Ottawa Senators are moving on to the second round of NHL playoffs for the first time since 2007 with a 4-1 series win.
It was another solid performance by Sens goaltender Craig Anderson who made 33 saves and ended the series with a .950 save percentage.
His counter-part Thursday night was Peter Budaj who filled in for the injured Carey Price in the 6-1 Senators’ win.
The victory gives Ottawa time to rest up and heal bruises before the conference semifinals begin next week.
Another six pack
For the second time in the series the Ottawa Senators scored six goals. Erik Condra had three points with one goal and also banked a controversial goal off of Kyle Turris while killing a penalty.
Cory Conacher continued his offence scoring two goals, but was ejected with 2:59 to go to avoid the hat-trick.
Zack Smith and Daniel Alfredsson added a goal each as well.
P.K. Subban scored the lone goal for injury-struck Montreal.
Goaltending battle
Craig Anderson and Peter Budaj played together for two seasons in Colorado, but there was a big difference in net Thursday night.
Budaj made 23 saves with a save percentage of .793 against Anderson’s .971.
Budaj was on the hotseat replacing the injured Carey Price in the Montreal net and the nerves showed early as the Senators scored on third shot of the night
Habs bit by the injury bug
In addition to Carey Price the Canadiens had five players injured in the series, forwards Brian Gionta, Lars Eller, Brandon Prust and Ryan White.
Expectations for the Montreal Canadiens weren’t high this season after finishing last in the conference a year ago.
Round two
Ottawa still has some scoreboard watching to do as they can meet Pittsburgh, Boston, Toronto or the New York Rangers in round two. The Eastern Conference Semi-Finals would not start earlier than Tuesday.
Tickets for Round two will go on sale to the public on Monday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at Capitaltickets.ca As well as Sens Store Locations at Carlingwood Mall and Place d’Orleans, any Ottawa Sports Experts location, Les Galeries de Hull, Ottawa Festivals and the Scotiabank Place box office.
