Alfie says comments “taken out of context, won’t give up.”

Sens Captain Daniel Alfredsson raised many eyebrows after Game 4 when he answered “probably not” when asked if the Senators could win three games in a row against the Penguins.

“I’m just saying we don’t have much going for us,” said Alfredsson after the game. “Maybe that’s the way we like it.”

After considerable criticism, Alfredsson addressed the comments today at practice.

“Was it taken out of context? Probably.”

“But that’s fine, I can handle that,” explained Alfredsson. “Maybe I should have continued where I left off the answer – I have no doubt one second that we’re going to come out with a great effort tomorrow.”

Alfredsson was criticized by fans and media for his pessimistic comments, although many believe he was just tired and frustrated after a long, brutal game. But some people praised Alfie for his honesty and realism – only 7% of teams come back to win when trailing 3-1 in a playoff series.

Meanwhile, Alfie’s teammates universally defended their Captain, Thursday afternoon. Jason Spezza told reporters he believes Alfie was misinterpreted.

“We’re not worried about Alfie,” said Spezza. “I think what he was trying to say is it’s a tall task but if there’s a team that can chip away at it it’s us.”

Meanwhile, the Captain also gained attention last night when he picked up the puck after the game ended – leading to speculation he might decide to retire after this season.

But Alfredsson said there was no significance in taking the puck.

“Could this be my last playoffs or could this be my last season? I don’t know. I don’t collect sticks or keep a lot of memorabilia at home so there’s no specific reason.”

Alfredsson has avoided talking about his future and it’s doubtful he’ll come to an answer before the summer.

The Senators face elimination in Game 5 in Pittsburgh, Friday night.
