63 charges laid in child abuse, intimate partner violence case

One person is facing dozens of charges in connection with an investigation of intimate partner violence and child abuse involving five victims.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they charged a 26-year-old man with 63 offences after launching an investigation in September.

Officers of the Leeds County Detachment and the OPP crime unit arrested the man who is accused of several Criminal Code charges, including attempted murder, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement, on Dec. 16.

There were five victims involved in the case, including three children under the age of 12 and two women in their 20s, OPP Constable Joey Mason told CityNews.

Initially, police were notified of the allegations against the man by one of the victims. Some of the offences the 26-year-old is facing go back to 2020, Mason said.

Several search warrants were carried out where police seized technology, forensic/DNA evidence and weapons.

“The incident is definitely out of the norm and not typically seen in this area,” Mason said. “Again, this incident encompasses many victims and many situations into one, leading to a higher number of charges against a single individual.”

Total charges laid against the 26-year-old include:

  • Attempt to commit murder
  • Sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age
  • Sexual assault
  • Sexual interference
  • Assault cause bodily harm (choke, suffocate or strangle) – 12 counts
  • Assault with a weapon – six counts
  • Assault – 14 counts
  • Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm – 16 counts
  • Forcible confinement – four counts
  • Dangerous operation – two counts
  • Extortion
  • Intimidation – use or threatens use of violence – two counts
  • Mischief
  • Fail to comply with probation order

The accused’s name will not be released in order to protect the victims.

He is scheduled to appear in a Brockville court in February.
