Man shot by police in Orleans; SIU investigating

OTTAWA – A 20-year-old man has been shot twice by police in Orleans and is in serious, but stable condition in The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus. Police are not yet saying what may have provoked the shooting, but a witness said the man was armed with a knife.

The shooting happened shortly before 6 p.m. near 10th Line and Innes Road.

One shaken witness says she saw police shoot a man “twice in the chest” around 6 p.m.

In addition to closing 10th Line, police also cordoned off a nearby brick house.

The southbound lanes of 10th Line were closed for roughly two hours before being re-opened. All lanes of 10th Line were finally re-opened to traffic, around noon on Wednesday.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has taken over the investigation, as in any case involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. An SIU spokesperson told 1310News, there was no estimate how long the investigation would take.

Early Wednesday afternoon, an Ottawa Police spokesperson said there was no decision made on whether the police officer involved would be reassigned while the SIU investigated.
