Mark Hutt found guilty of first-degree murder

OTTAWA – A jury has found Mark Hutt guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his wife Donna Jones.
Hutt had pleaded not guilty. Jones died from septic shock 12 days after she was drenched by a pot of boiling water.
Hutt told police he had been preparing a spaghetti dinner and accidentally spilled the pot on Jones.
The jury of eight women and four men listened carefully, Thursday, as the judge coached them on how to make a decision.
“Any hatred you feel against Mark Hutt must be put aside,” Justice Robert Maranger told the jurors.
On Wednesday, the defence admitted Hutt was an abuser and a liar – and even called Hutt a “monster” – but said he did not mean to kill his wife.
The defence said Hutt needed Donna alive for financial purposes, and that if he had wanted to kill her, he could have used one of his many weapons, and taken her to his remote trailer in the woods.
