OTTAWA – A senior’s home in Ottawa’s east end had to be evacuated Thursday because of a transformer failure.
Emergency crews were called to The Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre at 1750 Russell Road around 6:30 p.m. because of heavy smoke.
There were reports of transformer fire, which led to a backup generator powering up. It was confirmed that a diesel leak from the generator caused the extensive smoke, as well as an unusual odour.
Staff at the home was able to move residents in the affected area to another building. No Injuries were reported.
