Wynne backs Watson in casino location debate

OTTAWA – It looks like Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson now has a high profile supporter in the dispute over Ottawa’s proposed new casino.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne appears to be saddling up on the plan to build a new casino at the Rideau Carleton Raceway, saying she wants to see horse racing integrated into the strategy of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission.
“I want to have a sustainable industry and those were the points of divergence,” Wynne said. “The new chair and the new board will work on those priorities.”
However, Premier Wynne said she’s always stood by the fact that it is up to the City of Ottawa to make decisions regarding a new casino.
“The decisions about whether to have a casino or not are made at the municipal level,” Wynne said. “If there are additional concerns or issues, then the municipality needs to work with the OLG on that — but those are fundamentally municipal decisions.”
