OTTAWA – There will be no relief from the heat Tuesday; a heat warning issued by Ottawa Public Health remains in effect for the city.
Heat warnings are issued when the humidex is forecast to be above 40 degrees for more than two consecutive days; temperatures are expected to be around 30 degrees, with humidex values possibly exceeding 40 until Friday.
On Monday, the capital nudged close to a single day record which was 33.3 degrees back in 1969, but came up just shy at 33.2 degrees. There will be no relief any time soon.
“We’re in for another warm day indeed,” said 1310News meteorologist Jill Taylor. “We’ll be dealing with humidex values near 42.”
A humidex advisory is also still in effect for Ottawa and parts of eastern Ontario from Environment Canada. Humidex advisories are issued when temperatures reach at least 30 degrees and the maximum humidex is 40 or more.
“We need to remember to keep hydrated, reduce any strenuous outdoor activity,” advised 1310 meteorologist Harold Hosein. “At these levels, we need to try to keep cool in air conditioning if possible.”
Hosein adds how dangerous it is to leave pets or kids alone in vehicles; temperatures inside the vehicle can climb to dangerous levels when it’s this hot.
“Even five minutes is a vehicle unattended is too long,” Hosein advises. “Within five minutes, the temperature inside the car could rise way above 40 degrees Celsius.”
