The following statement was sent to 1310News from Calypso Theme Waterpark July 17, 2013:
The following is a statement issued by Guy Drouin, owner and operator of the Calypso Theme Waterpark in Limoges, Ontario.
“As a world-leading and award winning water theme amusement park, Calypso is committed to the safety and security of the more than 400,000 visitors who come to our park on an annual basis.
“Since Calypso opened in 2010, we have worked closely with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) to ensure we meet every regulatory requirement. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit, with whom we have an excellent collaborative relationship, regulates the bulk of our operations, including the pools, catch basins, water quality, lifeguards and restaurants. The TSSA regulates water slides only.
“Both agencies perform on-site technical and safety inspections before the Waterpark opens in the summer and during the operating season. The licenses and authorizations we receive to operate the park are based on meeting strict regulatory standards for safety and security.
“Calypso has implemented all of the TSSA’s safety related recommendations to date. Further, Calypso met with the TSSA in June 2013 and no additional concerns were raised. However, we will continue to work closely with the TSSA to address any outstanding concerns and issues they may have.
“Calypso makes every effort to ensure our visitors have a great experience when they include us in their summer vacation plans. To deliver the best experience for our visitors, our 600 employees are trained to meet the highest safety and security standards. In fact, as an active member of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) and the World Water Park Association, we are considered a leader in the global water park industry.
“As a major economic driver and employer in the Eastern Ontario region, we feel responsible and accountable to the community to ensure our park is safe and secure. Over a 10-year period, Calypso Park will inject $750 million into the economy of Eastern Ontario.”

The following statement was sent to 1310News from Calypso Theme Waterpark July 16, 2013:
Guy Drouin, owner and operator of Calypso Theme Waterpark: “Calypso management is strongly committed to the safety of its visitors and has always worked diligently with the TSSA to ensure best practices are applied. My staff and I have worked closely with TSSA since these issues were first raised two years ago.”
“That I was meeting with the Agency as recently as last month with no outstanding concerns raised and then to have these charges laid is very disappointing,” Drouin added.
Calypso’s lawyer Lawrence Greenspon added: “The laying of these 20 charges is a surprising abuse of power. All of these allegations have been addressed to ensure the public’s safety. They are already the subject of another process with the same Ministry responsible for TSSA.”
“Calypso is recognized as the award-winning world leader in water theme amusement parks and has an enviable record and reputation that it will defend if necessary,” said Drouin.
