NCC responds to western LRT route

OTTAWA – The National Capital Commission has responded to the passing of the preferred western Light Rail Transit route, near Richmond Street.
Ottawa City Council approved the western link at Wednesday’s meeting without debate, despite the NCC disproving of the plan.
The NCC released a statement Wednesday afternoon:
“Notwithstanding today’s decision by Ottawa City Council of the Richmond underground as the preferred corridor for the light rail, the decision as whether to build or not on federal lands in this corridor will remain with the National Capital Commission Board of Directors.
Two key conditions will inform any future NCC decision on the use of the Parkway lands for the western light rail project (as identified in the motion unanimously adopted by the Board at its June 28 meeting): unimpeded continuous access to the corridor lands and the shoreline of the Ottawa River as well as a minimal visual impact on the corridor landscape quality and its experience by users.”
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said council appreciates that the NCC is in a position to establish conditions. He adds, he is confident council can accommodate the board’s conditions as the city moves forward with the design process.
