Man convicted in disabled brother’s death sentenced to 20 years in prison

BROCKVILLE, Ont. – A Prescott, Ont., man convicted in the death of his disabled brother has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Jerry Hawley, 40, was found guilty of manslaughter in February after going to trial on a second-degree murder charge.
His brother, 41-year-old Jamie Hawley, died in May 2008.
The judge’s 53-page sentence states she thinks hawley used his brother for financial gain.
The judge tells The Sun her sentence acknowledges the extreme harm done to Jamie and there is evidence the accused never cared about his brother’s well-being.
A coroner’s investigation determined he died of pneumonia, starvation and infected bedsores.
He was confined to a wheelchair due to a previous injury and lived with his brother, who also acted as his immediate guardian.
Hawley’s three years and 143 days served in pre-sentence custody will count towards his 20 year sentence.
