OC Transpo admits to double-decker brake problems

OTTAWA – OC Transpo has admitted there were brake problems on its double-decker buses at the time of the Barrhaven bus crash last September.

According to documents obtained by the Citizen through the access to information act, the bus involved in the crash at Fallowfield Station had not yet been serviced, though other buses had, as the company was in the midst of a campaign to repair faulty brakes.

The bus involved in the crash broke through the gate and hit a Via Rail train after riders on the bus reported feeling two pumps of the brakes. The collision killed six people, including the driver.

A number of bus operators have also said the double-deckers have been known to have poor brakes, while OC Transpo denies the brakes have created any safety problems, saying the issues are long-term.

OC Transpo General Manager John Manconi said the concern was about the costs of wear and tear in the long run, not with safety.

The Transportation Safety Board continues its investigation into the crash.
